Hydrogen Station

A hydrogen station is a facility that produces, stores, and dispenses hydrogen fuel to vehicles or industrial processes. Unlike traditional gas stations, hydrogen stations require specialized equipment to handle the unique properties of hydrogen, such as its flammability and low energy density. These stations are designed to provide a safe, reliable source of hydrogen, often integrating on-site production methods like electrolysis or reforming, or sourcing hydrogen from external suppliers.

 

The Key Components of a Refuelling Station
 

Hydrogen inlet: Refuelling stations are configured for optimum performance based on the hydrogen inlet pressure. The hydrogen can be produced on site most commonly via electrolysis, delivered to site and fuelled directly from a tube trailer or via on-site storage.

 

Compression: The hydrogen is then compressed to increase the pressure, and reduce the volume, to enable a greater amount of hydrogen to be stored in the system and an efficient flow of gas for dispensing.

 

Heat exchanger (process gas chilling): The compressed hydrogen is then passed through a heat exchanger to remove the excess heat from the gas that was generated during the compression process. Specially designed hydrogen-resistant valves and fittings are used to control the highly pressurised hydrogen. These components utilise specific materials that are resistant to hydrogen embrittlement to prevent any cracking.

 

Hydraulic power unit and controls: The process is powered, monitored and controlled via the electronic control panel in the non-hazardous zone.

Dispensing chiller system: The hydrogen is then cooled to subzero temperatures for fast and efficient filling to ensure the hydrogen can be dispensed safely and to comply with filling protocols i.e. J2601.

 

Vent stacks: A safety feature to vent any escaped hydrogen safely. Hydrogen is lighter than air so dissipates quickly and safely, should an incident occur.

 

Storage: The high-pressure gas is then stored in the system until required for dispensing at the point of use. The storage is controlled by specially designed valves, fittings and electrical controls designed to regulate pressure and interact with the dispenser and vehicle as needed.

 

Dispenser: Designed to emulate traditional fuelling methods, the hydrogen is dispensed via a nozzle controlled by a smart valve which regulates the flow rate of the gas to fill the vehicle to the required pressure in accordance with the fuelling protocol.

Electrolysis is the process in which water H₂O is divided into hydrogen H₂ and oxygen O₂, using electric energy. If such electricity comes from renewable sources, then it can also be termed as green hydrogen, sourced either from solar or wind.

 

Steam Methane Reforming: It is the most deployed process in the world at the moment. Hydrogen is taken out from natural gas. This process, however, is an emitter of CO₂ and not as environment-friendly in nature as compared to electrolysis.

 

Biomass gasification: Organic material such as wood and agricultural waste gets transformed into hydrogen. This, through its own argument, may be considered more sustainable than SMR.

 

Storage: Hydrogen, after production, is stored at high pressure. Commonly, each and every hydrogen station would have storage tanks with hydrogen stored at pressure ranging between 350 to 700 bar or 5,000 to 10,000 psi. Due to its very low density, hydrogen has to be compressed up to a very high degree in order to fit into manageable-sized storage tanks so that it can be efficiently dispensed to the vehicles.

 

Cooling and Compression: Before distribution, hydrogen is compressed and then cooled before distribution. Compression puts the hydrogen at the right pressure for refueling into the vehicles, while cooling lowers the temperature that the compression creates. This stage is very critical in avoiding overheating during refuel, which may affect the integrity of the fuel tank.

 

Dispensing: It enables hydrogen to be dispensed into the vehicle’s tank through a specially designed nozzle fitted properly and securely in a particular fitting into the vehicle’s fuel receptacle. Refueling would take approximately a couple of minutes, which is just like how filling up with petrol or diesel would work. The safety measures will ensure that the hydrogen is cleared of any leakage and/or risks for the explosion, hence making this process safe and efficient.
